Reflections and Learnings from TechCon

As the Director of Operations at a WNIN, one could say I wear many hats. I oversee the day-to-day operations in television, I create promotional schedules for on-air usage, and I champion digital like there is no tomorrow. When I found myself en route to my first PBS TechCon nearly one year ago, I was ecstatic. I looked forward most of all to the new digital track that would be open, and all the insight to be learned.

I expected to learn, to obtain knowledge from my peers that I could share with my own colleagues. Reflecting back, though, TechCon became something bigger to me. In true nerd fashion, it became an outlet where I was able to connect with like minded people and share my passions. It also became an event I find imperative every digital professional add to their calendar.

The PBS Digital team, who proves themselves to be a true asset to our work community on a daily basis, did an amazing job at making me feel welcomed and informed. They were friendly, knowledgable, and always open to answering questions and providing their insight into the digital realm.

More so though, they provided a unique mixture of sessions that not only allowed me to learn from my peers from around the country, it also allowed me to connect with them in a unique and profound way. I listened to their stories of successes and failures and, in doing so, was able to find opportunities for my station that we might not have come around to before. I also found a genuine willingness to connect, one that has proven to inspire deep relationships that continue to impact both my career and my stations movement forward today.

Attending PBS TechCon was an amazing, monumental shift in my career— one that I hope every person can experience. Learning is gaining new insight, new connections, and new experience.  As I prepare for round two this year, I hope to see each and every one of you there!
