As you know, PBS Digital, PBS Development Services and a group of seven pilot stations have been working together for more than 18 months to build and test Member Video on Demand (MVOD), a service giving qualified station donors access to an expanded library of public television programming as an added benefit of membership.

We’ve been in a technical beta test with these pilot stations (WNET, KET, KQED, tpt, OPB) for the last month, with these stations inviting small groups of their existing donors to test the service. We’re happy to report that the test has been going well.

We’re on track to begin deploying the service to stations later this year. To that end we’ve begun a multi-phased station onboarding process that includes in-person sessions for station leadership teams followed by a series of virtual training sessions. The first phase is a multi-city roadshow to provide information on the project and answer your questions about MVOD. 

These sessions are designed for

  • Station CEOs/GMs or their chief deputy

  • Development or Membership Directors

  • Digital directors

  • Managers of station member databases

The sessions will provide an overview of Member Video on Demand and the marketing, communications and technical requirements to participate. We’ll also discuss the steps and timelines for stations to deploy MVOD. Participants will hear directly from the project’s leaders – including one or both of us at most locations – as well as members of the seven-station MVOD task force.

The first roadshow is scheduled for April 30 in Detroit, as an extra day appended to the PBS Regional Meeting being hosted by Detroit Public Television and Rich Homberg. We’ve confirmed the dates and locations of nine other sessions, beginning May 4 at WETA in northern Virginia. A list of dates and cities that have been scheduled so far are included below; others will be announced soon. (Note: These sessions are only for station personnel.) 

MVOD will be an important tool to help stations retain current donors, reactivate lapsed donors and acquire new donors. We hope to see many of you during these sessions to learn how your station can employ MVOD in your market.
