As the Director of Communications, she manages social media, PR, blog content, and much more. When she can find a free moment, April keeps busy by exploring all there is to see in the Austin outdoors.

1. Describe your role on the KLRU Communications team.
I'm the Director of Communications in the Community Engagement Department at KLRU. My role includes general PR, social media for the station, blog content, promotion of events and fundraisers, film screenings/discussions and trying to get studio audiences for our various productions. There is so much more that is harder to define. It's my dream job because things are different every day and there is never time to get bored.

2. What’s the best lesson you’ve learned so far working in public television?
It's OK to make mistakes. We get to have big ideas and some times they work and some times they don't. Trying things and failing is just part of the process.

3. If you could go back to your first day at KLRU and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?
I started working at KLRU in 2000 and I had a very tight budget at the time. I would tell myself that I should go out to lunch and happy hour with coworkers more often. Socializing with coworkers once a week or so wouldn't have been that big of a budget drain.

4. What’s one fact about working at KLRU that would surprise most people?
There are so many different projects going on at the same time. We have Overheard with Evan Smith and Austin City Limits tapings that require live audiences, in person and OVEE screenings and discussions of films, candidate forums, educational services events, media trades with other Austin organizations and lots more in one week! This isn't something that is unusual for a PBS station because we're all really involved in the community beyond television. A lot of people in our community only know about the things of specific interest to them and are surprised to find out about all the other things going on.

5. What’s your favorite mobile app?
This one isn't very exciting but ... MyNetDiary Pro is the app I use every day. I use it as a food journal in an app form. For fun, I'm currently into playing Jellies!

6. What’s the one website you can’t go a day without?
reddit. I start with r/austin to find out about local news. I end the day with r/funny.

7. What keeps you busy when you aren’t working?
While the majority of my life is spent at work, I live in a town full of creative people and there is never a shortage of events from live music to live theater. I spend a lot of time being an audience member. I also spend a lot of time walking and getting figuratively and literally lost in the outdoors.

8. Describe KLRU in a word.
Inspiring .... working here really does inspire me on an (almost) daily basis.
