PBS Video Apps Get An Upgrade

Last Updated by Trisha Cruz , Jeff Tubb on

Core Data Model updates have launched on the PBS Video App for iOS and legacy Apple TV (3rd-gen and earlier), leveraging the improved metadata structure and UX improvements. Updates for Roku launched on June 13 and will be rolling out over the next month.

What’s new from an end-user perspective?

  • Browse though episodes faster with shows organized by seasons.

  • Explore new themed collections within your favorite shows.

  • Watch a preview for the next episode before you dive in.

What’s new from a station perspective?

  • For stations that have organized their videos in Media Manager by season and episode, you’ll now see that distinction throughout the app. This improved metadata is reflected in a new video pattern.

  • Collections, Specials and Extras will display in the appropriate categories.

  • A list of shows “You Might Also Like” (based on genre) will display on show and video pages.

  • The first promoted list on the Home screen is a new list called “Spotlight.” The first three spots are videos from national programs, and the fourth spot pulls in the first video that appears in the “Station Video Portal Carousel” section in Curate.

  • Local station shows are featured on the Home screen and are curatable with the “Station Shows List” feature in Curate.

  • At the top of each show page, the carousel now pulls in full-length videos from the “PBS.org Show Carousel” feature in Curate.

  • Overall, the Home screen includes an expanded amount of content for users to browse through. The order of these lists will be synced up across every app platform.

Roku Update:

The PBS Roku rollout begins on June 13, and will be fully complete in early July. While our Roku releases usually take about 24 hours to roll out, this release is tied to a new Roku firmware that has started rolling out. This dependency is due to issues in the current Roku firmware (8.0) that do not occur on the newer version (8.1). As a result, our new release will require users to have the new Roku 8.1 software on their devices. It should take about 3 weeks for Roku to roll out the new firmware to everyone, and the PBS app should auto-update at the same time as the firmware.

As this is version 1 of the CDM rollout in the PBS Video apps, we’re looking forward to hearing from any station that has input on features and functionality of either the front-end experience or the back-end admin.

The Core Data Model updates are coming to Roku, tvOS, and Android soon.

Please keep an eye out for opportunities to provide feedback on future builds, as well as upcoming product webinars.
