YoPro San Diego: Creating Success and Innovation in Storytelling

Last Updated by Amy Lust | Assistant Director | PBS Digital, Jen Carter Hinders | Product Manager | PBS Digital on

With YoPro San Diego just around the corner we are gearing up for a day of stellar presenters and insightful discussions. You can register for this FREE workshop, which will be held Monday, May 15, 2017 from 8AM-3PM at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina in San Diego, CA right before the PBS Annual Meeting. In a recent SPI blog post we gave a precursor as to what attendees can expect at this year’s workshop. With a welcome from PBS' CEO Paula Kerger; a leadership panel composed of PBS and station executives; and a collaborative discussion with station general managers and young professionals, the workshop is shaping up to be the most engaging and energizing event YoPro has put on to-date. Since our last post about this workshop, we have confirmed additional speakers to help broaden the conversions and topics for the day.

Finding and Keeping an Audience
There are few key elements to be successful with your digital content: vision, focus and an audience. This session is devoted to showcasing content initiatives and organizations from within the system. Hear from Carla McCabe, SVP for Digital and Multimedia Content for KCPT, Maribel Lopez, Project and Relations Manager for Rewire at TPT, and Leslie Datsis, Social Media & Audience Development Specialist for PBS Digital Studios about their first-hand experience on how they found their audience for their programs and what challenges they faced. Throughout their presentations they will be discussing the vision for their teams, what content and storytelling they focus on, and how they determine, sustain and diversify their audience.

Innovation in Storytelling
To help continue the thread of innovation in the digital and content spaces, there will be a session on how programs like Frontline use cutting edge technology such as 360˚ video and VR, to give audiences a unique perspective on some of the most compelling, complex, vital and often-controversial subjects. Carla Borrás, Director of Digital Video for Frontline, will give a broad overview of this new space, share ways this technology connects with viewers, and explain how Frontline is integrating this technology to enhance their stories. YoPro attendees will be able to demo the latest VR and 360˚ content from Frontline. Workshop attendees can also expect to learn how their organizations and local programs can leverage and gain buy-in for these tools at little cost or effort for the station.
