Celebrate Public Media at this year's PBS Annual Meeting

celebratePBS.jpg The PBS Annual Meeting is more than a conference- it’s obviously a place to network, make great connections, put faces to names and learn about the fantastic upcoming content from across the system, but its something else too.  It can provide moments that can transform you and make you glad you listened to the Public Media call.

This will be my first annual meeting from the PBS side.  I’ve been on the station side for many years with WETA and have been to many annual meetings (even when it was called Showcase). From wrangling jump ropers for a Clifford Breakfast to helping set a giant rainforest for Big Big World, I am very familiar with the 5am bleary wake up call. The annual meeting can be hectic and fast paced, a whirlwind of activity and searching for lost boxes... but then I had this experience in Denver that stopped me in my tracks and turned me back into that PBS kid.

At the end of the Daniel Tiger breakfast a colleague introduced me to Joanne Rogers, (the widow of Mr. Rogers) and I told her how much I’d loved Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, and how Mr. Rogers was the reason I had gone into public television. After I told her this, Mrs. Rogers took my hand, gave me a kiss and told me he would have been so honored and proud and she’d hoped I was proud of myself too.  I started crying like a baby. It was that feeling of being part of something special that I took back with me from Denver, and I still think about three years later. At the annual meeting, inspiration can strike at anytime.

We have been hard at work at PBS getting ready for Chicago and here are some upcoming digital highlights for you to attend and enjoy:

  • YoProWo Workshop May 16, 2016 (8AM-5PM)
    PBS will be producing its third-annual free pre-conference workshop geared towards young professionals. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from a range of speakers and topics including a collaborative discussion with GMs around where public media will be in 20 years; highlighting trends in digital, marketing, social media and education; and outlining common do’s and don’ts of leadership.   • PBS Digital Booth:  May 17th and 18th (9AM-5PM)
    Come by and talk with your digital rep! We will have two tables set up outside the Chicago Ballroom to demo our apps on OTT and mobile devices, as well as literature about our products and services. Swing by and lets talk digital!
  • General Session: The Tranformative Power of Digital for Storytellers May 17 (3:15 PM-4:05PM)
    Ira Rubenstein, SVP and General Manager of PBS Digital and Marketing, will share key projects past and future. Following this update, John Boland, President of KQED/San Francisco, leads a panel of content creators, marketers, and broadcasters to discuss the ways digital technologies and platforms are changing how we tell and share stories. Panelists include Raney Aronson-Rath, Executive Producer, FRONTLINE; Emmett Shear, Founder and CEO, Twitch; and Don Wilcox, Vice President, Digital Strategy & Services, PBS.
  • Concurrent Sessions
    Join PBS Digital in sessions such as: How to Leverage the New PBS.org at your Station, Passport & Beyond, The Reality of Virtual Reality, The Road to Multiplatform Success, and many more
