4 Reasons to Attend TechCon This Year
Last Updated by
Vegas may conjure thoughts of sparkly costumed entertainers, faux European waterways and dim tables of card sharks, but for me, I think of conference rooms, the hustle bustle of exhibit halls, and late nights getting to know new friends.
TechCon is what I think of when I hear Vegas. While TechCon may be one of the oldest public media conferences, I see it rising in importance every year. Public media technology lives in two houses, broadcast and digital. The blend of these two is just the beginning of the reasons to attend TechCon this year.
Figuring it All Out
The agenda at TechCon is as varied as the tech world. Just take a look at the session tracks offered - Engineering, I.T., Leadership/Management, Traffic/Programming and Digital! The Digital track covers a little bit of everything - from sessions on lessons learned, original digital content featuring KQED’s Deep Look, the future of digital content, a look at analytics, the social media bonanza, PBS Digital Products - just to name a few! Where else will you find a similar breadth of topics and quality discussions?
Face to Face with Station Peers and PBS Staff
When else would you have an opportunity to corner the product manager of your station video portal and the social media strategy director in the same room! Actually that happens more than you might think, but you get the point. While visiting the PBS Digital booth in the exhibit hall, you can schedule time to meet with various PBS staffers and ask them all your pertinent questions.
TechCon provides opportunities for colleagues to learn from each other, whether gathering with peers to share ideas and solutions or chatting with a new friend while walking to dinner about a project at your station.
Education being the heart of what we do in public media, you will hear from PBS LearningMedia about how they're working to deliver more opportunities in this area. PBS LearningMedia will be sharing tools that leverage multi-platform learning in classrooms and how your station can better partner with local educators. Hear teacher-station success stories and learn about the mechanics behind content publication and education standards alignment during this session.
Let’s Get Social
In addition to the fun events going on at TechCon, there are quite a few sessions focused on different areas of social media. Beginning with taking a look at last year’s Big Blue Live, PBS’s first multi-platform foray, to the tried and true tips and tricks from stations and PBS’s own social media leaders, Kevin Dando and Natalie Benson.
Side note: even if you can't attend TechCon this year you can track along with what everyone is learning by following #TechCon16 on Twitter.
