New ‘PBS Video’ app now available on both Android and iOS platforms
Last Updated by
PBS is thrilled to announce the release of the all new PBS Video app, now available for the first time on Android devices through the Google Play store. In addition to the launch, an update will be released for the existing PBS iOS app for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.
These releases are the first of what will be an iterative process to provide stations and users an optimal experience for viewing local and national video on mobile devices. We received a great deal of feedback during the beta release. And we will continue to listen to user feedback as we improve upon these releases.
The PBS Video app on both platforms will provide users with access to an expansive library of programming from PBS member stations. Users can watch their primetime favorites as well as the PBS archives, with new national and local content updated daily. The app will also feature online content from the Webby-award winning PBS Digital Studios.
Localization and Cove
The app’s enhanced auto-localization will prompt new users to identify their local PBS station. Local station programs that are ingested into Cove will automatically surface in these apps when a user is localized to a station. The programs will populate within the apps the same way they do with OTT devices.
PBS Video will use poster images to display programs within the app. To add poster images to your content channel send the files to your Digital rep or email email@example.com.
Sign-in enhances the usability of the app. Users who utilize sign-in on PBS Video will be able to:
- Resume viewing programs from previous sessions
- Bookmark favorite shows
- Add videos to a watch playlist
- View watch history
- Access the app across multiple devices
The Android and iOS applications will be compatible with Chromecast, allowing users to display local video from the app on their television screens. To begin streaming, users simply plug Chromecast into their TV, connect to a WiFi network and press the ‘cast icon’ to cast videos to their TV.
